· Counting Stone ·
Carved. Tilted. Counted.
This piece refused to behave. I started with the idea of a simple vessel, but as I built it, the form began to bend. The metal poles curved. The opening tilted to one side instead of facing upward. I didn't fight it. I followed.
The surface came next. I added bulging protrusions across the base and crown, then covered everything with paper pulp. The texture emerged rough and uneven, like stone carved by ancient hands. Between the poles, I strung stone-like discs on thin metal wire, creating a grid that feels ceremonial. Like an abacus. Like something made for counting, for ritual, for a purpose we no longer understand.
What makes this piece unusual is how it transforms depending on where you place it. Tilt the opening toward you, and it feels open, inviting. Turn it to the side, and the symmetry breaks. Face it away, and the disc grid becomes the focus while the opening hides, letting only stems emerge mysteriously.
It's a vase, but it's also sculpture. Strange, otherworldly, yet grounded in familiar materials arranged in unfamiliar ways. It works well in wabi-sabi spaces, primitive-inspired interiors, or any room that values unconventional form and quiet mystery.
